New Delhi:

People often receive unwanted calls and messages, which can be both annoying and harmful. To address this, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced new guidelines.

From now on, all telemarketing calls must switch to the 140 series for better monitoring and control.

Telecom companies have been given a deadline until September 30 to comply.

Additionally, starting September 1, no message will be allowed to contain URLs, APKs, OTT links, or callback numbers.

Telecom Companies Must Track Message Details

TRAI has also directed all telecom companies to update their systems for handling messages.

By November 1, 2024, they must have complete details of both the sender and receiver for every message.

Messages lacking this information will be rejected.

Furthermore, any content templates registered under the wrong category must be blacklisted, and those responsible may face a one-month suspension.

A single content template cannot be linked to multiple headers, and all guidelines must be strictly followed.

Penalties for Errors in Headers or Content Templates

TRAI has warned that if any errors are found in the header or content template, all related headers and templates from that company will be suspended.

These companies will then need to undergo a verification process and complete legal formalities before resuming operations.

Telemarketers and delivery services must report any misuse of messages within two days, or they too will face strict action.

TRAI’s Goal: A Clear and Transparent Messaging System

TRAI’s main goal is to make the messaging system transparent and protect consumers’ interests.

These measures are crucial for safeguarding people from fraudulent messages and financial scams.
